Stuart Bowl opened in 1961, and immediately created much excitement in the Stuart, Iowa bowling community. Three local businessmen and their families built the business: C.W. Bright, Dr. L.F. Miller, and Kenneth Jones. A large grand opening was held in August 1961, and leagues were filled.
The new dining room and lounge were popular in a town with limited dining options. Management changed multiple times in the first decade. Earl and Marcella Gray and Ray LaFrenz were two fixtures that will be remembered from those early years.
A young Terry Harrison and his mother, Jaunita, purchased the bowling alley in 1974, and it has remained a Harrison-led operation for over 45 years. Terry’s parents, Gene and Juanita Harrison, remained active in helping with the establishment for several years.
1996 was a memorable year with many physical improvements, including glow in the dark bowling with black lights and automated scoring.
Stuart Bowl also landed the State Super Team Tournament in 1996, which was a landmark event in the business.
Through the years, sanctioned league bowling across the nation has declined but Terry Harrison has countered the trend by creating a fun atmosphere for family and party bowling while improving food and beverage offerings.
Additional bowling improvements were undertaken in 2000, 2002, and 2003, as the center became a family destination for all ages. After major health challenges, Harrison created Traditions Sports Bar & Grill, and in 2017, again made major bowling equipment improvements with new synthetic lanes and HDTV scoring screens installed, while the pin setting equipment was renovated to like-new condition.
While the overall bowling industry has declined, and many centers shuttered in recent decades the constant investment at Stuart Bowl has kept this now 60+ year old entertainment venue fresh and very active.
